Teching life to a new level
Founder and CEO of the multimillion-dollar technology firm CyberSynchs LLC Amos Winbush III made his first visit to Jamaica as the guest speaker at the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA), biennial fundraising gala in Montego Bay.
Flair caught up with Winbush, who told us that his path to becoming a leader in the tech field was quite accidental.
"I never actually set out to own a company. In fact, I was in the music business as a singer/songwriter. But the saying, 'innovation stems from necessity' is absolutely true," he explained.
He told Flair that the idea for his company was born after his mobile phone crashed and he lost all his data.

CyberSynchs is a technology firm located in New York city specializing in developing universal data synchronization and streaming capabilities for electronic devices including digital camcorders and cable boxes, it CyberSynchs is presently in the process of developing and improving synchronization systems for cars and medical devices."There was a need in the market. I wanted to fill that market because I know that if I was having that problem, then there had to be millions of people who were having the exact same issues, so it was my responsibility to build CyberSynchs."
Winbush explained that the concept of CyberSynchs, which was launched in , is very simple.
"It provides a software that allows an individual to synchronise and back up content from a mobile phone, laptop, PC, digital camera or camcorder to another device," explained Winbush.
Service above self
The young entrepreneur, who turned 30 in July, stressed the importance of service above self, adding that the concept of service is imperative in everything he does.
"I try to figure out how I can be of service to either the person that's listening to me, watching me, or the person that doesn't know me, but sees me at a distance through a magazine or a newspaper article. I think how am I going to serve that end user? And if I can't figure out what that is, I don't do it.
I think a sense of service actually overrides a sense of selfishness and it gives you true purpose versus what's in it for me," Winbush told Flair.
So how does one turn US$ into millions? The answer is hard work, a lot of struggle and a lot of sacrifice.

When ouur trusty, inexpensive, Black and Decker toaster oven started spewing smoe from its side, we commenced a quest for something which would match on ouur cramped counter. There were few selectiopns so we plumped for a fresh Breville merchandise expecting the price might somehow be justified garnering any consistently hig reviews. A bit dear, but you get what you purchase. This can bbe a great-looking toaster oven with a lot of functions. This success can be attributed to the company's ability to listen to customers and provide great products which can be used.
"CyberSynchs has done really well listening to its customers, building products they love, can digest and utilise every day. We have a retention rate of 98 per cent since the company was launched, and that's something we work really hard at, making sure the true intentions of the business remain the same," Winbush said.
I was hungry
Like Oprah, Winbush has served as a source of inspiration to not only African Americans, but youth around the world.
His success has not been without sacrifices. "I think sacrifices are part of the beautiful journey I've been on with my wife and my family. It's a necessary evil, you can say; I really don't look at it as sacrifice, I look at it as a rite of passage."
Winbush believes anything worth having, is worth working hard for. "I let it be known that, yes, I was hungry; yes, I was almost homeless; yes, we didn't have all of the worldly possessions, but I was working towards something that was larger than me.
So while going through it, I never thought of it as sacrifice. It was probably one of the most exciting and exhilarating times of my life," he revealed.
As he embarks on the latest initiative, Project Entrepreneur, the young CEO admits he does look at entrepreneurship very differently from other people. "It is a way of life, and what we should do as a community around the world is to help foster entrepreneurship through education, and look towards entrepreneurship not only as the ability to create generational wealth, but access to opportunity for generation after generation."
He is quick to note that entrepreneurship is not a get-rich scheme, but a true struggle.
"There is a time cap of about five years before most companies see a profit. And if you do see a profit, you're putting that money right back into the business. So it's not that you're going out and driving a Mercedes or Bentley, but you're getting a sensible car. You're responsible to your investors and to your users.

Get out of your own way
And what advice does he have for aspiring entrepreneurs? "I would say get out of your own way. It's so easy for an entrepreneur to think that they have all the ideas and that they can effect change themselves by just saying it.
It doesn't work that way.

Amos Winbush III, a Shreveport native and musician in New York City, watched his cell phone suddenly crash and all of his contacts disappear during a recording session in Winbush, a onetime American Idol contestant, veered off his path in the music industry to launch CyberSynchs for technology to automatically back up data on computers, cell phones and other mobile devices. He hired his first employee from Craigslist, although he couldn't immediately pay a salary. As part of the week-long entrepreneurship program produced by The Idea Village, Winbush gave a keynote talk with moderator Monty Sullivan, president of Louisiana's community college system. On the same day of his speech, Winbush's company in New York was launching a new product based on a seemingly simple idea. You have to get great people around you who are smarter than you, who have a different perspective on life, which is the reason diversity is so important when it comes to entrepreneurship. Diversity allows you to think outside the box and look at a problem or an opportunity differently," emphasised Winbush.
Given the island's current economic challenges, Winbush believes Jamaica is blessed with an abundance of natural resources which it can tap into, but the youth should be key to the process.
"I think when we talk about natural resources, we talk about people. Most organisations or societies have a hierarchy because we feel comfortable with the people that have shown a path and history of creating great wealth, and those individuals that don't have history, we tend to be very leery of, so we don't engage them.
What is needed is a community that is open, receptive and honest with the challenges that face the country, and the answers are with the youth," Winbush told Flair.
The Louisiana native, who is the youngest of three children (the only boy) for his mom Irene and dad Amos Winbush, Jr, explains that everything he does has to surround one purpose and that is providing access to opportunity.
"And whatever that means, I have a responsibility to explore it.
If that means finding access to opportunity around self-improvement, getting closer to a higher power, having the ability to communicate your visions, launching new industries, holding companies and the leaders of countries accountable, that's what responsibility is and I'm lucky to have kind of figured that out early in life."
While it was his first visit to the island, it sure doesn't appear to be his last.
"I have travelled all around the world and I can honestly say that Jamaica is a beautiful country. I've been to a lot of beautiful places, but it's the people that really drive the experience and it's been a great one from the people you meet on the beach, to the wait staff to the chef to the executives of the resort. I find that the best conversations are with the people who love what they do and I find myself gravitating towards the landscapers and the lifeguard at the beach.
It has enhanced my view that there are a lot of beautiful places out there and there are special places, and Jamaica to me is a special place."
